R.L. (Randall) Butterfield
Growing up on the Canadian prairies, Randall’s two main interests were art and basketball. After high school he had to choose so he studied art with the help of basketball scholarships - merging the two,
then finally choosing art. He graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design (Calgary) in 1984.
Then he embarked on a successful career in graphic design, illustration, and painting, earning many
awards along the way. He moved into teaching in his early forties and found that he enjoyed nurturing young students. He taught drawing and illustration for 22 years at Red River College in Winnipeg,
before retiring in 2022.

Randall’s subject matter consists of images derived from his surroundings, concentrating on life drawing, portraiture, still life and landscape painting. His deep connection to the land and nature comes from his Metis background.

These days he is a full-time artist dividing his time between Winnipeg, Canada and Pezenas, France.  

Fuelled by numerous cups of coffee, he fills his days painting, reading and endlessly watching documentaries about art and artists. He is obsessed with finding gallery exhibitions wherever he goes,
and out of the way places to eat - especially in Paris. In his spare time, he can be found gardening, walking, cycling, and building the occasional shed in his backyard.

Randall’s work can be found in the collections of Shell and Imperial Oil in Calgary, Parks Canada, the Regina Exhibition Board and numerous private collections across Canada, Scotland and France. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions and has had three solo shows. His work has been shown at The Torrance Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland and at Fleet Galleries in Winnipeg, Canada. Select works are currently being shown at Warehouse Artworks in Winnipeg, Canada.
